A Move into Sustainable Design

Welcome to the age of Sustainability.

We watched, we cringed, and we learnt. And sadly I worry we learnt a little too little too late, with all of the oversights of the past few generations of Gardeners and Landscapers behind us we might be a at a pressure point for our green spaces in New Zealand.

But! There is hope, and personally I have hope that Bartholomew Designs can be but a drop in a ocean of change, but just big enough to make an impact to the world directly around us.

Since I studied design we have been continuing to research ways to increase native planting, introduce more vegetable gardens and kitchen gardens (which now appear to be increasing in popularity), use more organic fertilizers and less harmful chemicals, and in 2026 we are making a full leap over to ensuring that we do our due diligence on every product we use.

I want to take a second also to touch on a movement that has been hindering our progress in this space, as a population, which is greenwashing. Many businesses have been marketing themselves in certain ways to appear the sustainable option, and our research has run into this time and time again, so my guarantee is that we are not attempting to pull the wool over your eyes - we want the next generations to survive, along with the planet, and we are doing what we can to make that happen.

More news to come, so exciting updates also! But for now, welcome to the Greener Bartholomew Designs!
